Jay D. Flores: SHPE's current National Undergraduate Representative

In the time that I have been a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers I have grown tremendously as a professional, and more importantly as a Hispanic role model.  Throughout my life there has always been a role model or an organization that has cared for and supported my development, and in the past two and a half years SHPE has been one of the top contributors.  For this reason I would like to continue to give back to our Hispanic community at the highest undergraduate level within SHPE.  My passion for SHPE and my desire to strengthen its national impact on the Hispanic undergraduate community have inspired me to run for a second term as National Undergraduate Representative (NUR) for the 2011-2012 SHPE year.

From the time that I first joined SHPE, I have had one of the most unique SHPE experiences possible.  Thanks to a study abroad experience I have been a member of two different undergraduate chapters.  I went from being a member one of the smallest chapters at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Region 6) with 21 members to SHPE’s largest chapter at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (Region 4), which had 634 members.  After returning to Madison, I helped my chapter grow from small to medium size (according to the NRP) thus providing me with leadership experiences in an undergraduate chapter of each of the three possible sizes recognized by SHPE National and in two different regions.  These experiences paired with my two years of experience on the SHPE National Board of Directors have provided me with leadership experiences at all levels of the organization. This background as well as familiarity with the organization makes me the most qualified candidate to serve as the undergraduate voice on the SHPE National Board of Directors as the 2011-2012 National Undergraduate Representative.

Top three reasons to vote for Jay Flores

1)      Experience: (2009-2010 Vice National Undergraduate Representative & current National Undergraduate Representative).  My two years of experience on the SHPE National Board of Directors will allow me to start working on the strategic plan for the year immediately instead of having to learn about or adjust to the role and its responsibilities.

2)      Passion: SHPE holds a very special place in my heart, and I have a very strong belief in its mission and vision.  This strong passion that I have for SHPE ensures that I always put my best effort into the high level of commitment that a position on the SHPE National Board of Directors demands.

3)      Relationships & Executive Presence: I‘ve developed strong friendships with members throughout the nation, and have gained the respect of the NBOD, National staff, and our CEO.  These relationships are a key part of ensuring that the undergraduate voice is heard on the National Board of Directors.

“Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to     making something extraordinary happen.” – Alan Keith

It would be a great honor to serve as the National Undergraduate Representative on the SHPE National Board of Directors, and I look forward to working closely with all of you in order to take SHPE to the next level.
